Green Building Materials

Green building materials that are alternatives to concrete

Green building material is made up of renewable and is environmentally friendly. The green building is environmentally responsible starting from its design, planning, maintenance, construction, renovation, a material used and demolition.

The construction of green buildings requires everyone’s cooperation involved in the project whether you are a contractor, architect or engineer. There are various Eco-friendly materials alternatives for traditional building material available these days. You can choose these alternative green building materials for environmental responsible constructions.

What is the aim of promoting the green building concept?

The continuous development has led to various harmful effects on the environment such as pollution, emission of greenhouse gases, global warming, etc. This is one of the alarming situations when we need to find out a solution to get out of this hazardous sheet that we have created all around us.

Green building material is a very helpful practice that can be followed to create an Eco-friendly atmosphere across the globe. The traditional material such as concrete used for the construction of a building has harmful effects not only on the environment but on human health as well.
This is the reason the usage of Eco-friendly building materials is promoting day by day for various benefits such as environmental improvement, cost-effective, social benefits, etc.

What are the components of a Green Building?

When we talk about the components or elements of a green building, it has four main components that play a major role in its construction. These components help in increasing the sustainability of the green building. The components of green building are –

  • Green Building – Materials

Sustainable building materials are mainly environmentally friendly. The Eco-friendly building materials are acquired from natural and renewable resources. These materials are acquired locally to minimize the energy cost of transport.

The green building material is not only Eco-friendly but it also energy-efficient, durable, recycled material, reduces the number of landfill wastes, etc.

  • Green building – energy efficiency

In terms of the energy system, a green building helps in reducing the heating & cooling costs. A green building also empowers with insulation properties and is also energy-efficient due to the use of green building material.

The construction of a green building not only includes green material but also includes energy-efficient lighting, low energy appliances and renewable energy techniques such as wind turbines & solar panels.

  • Green building – water system

Green building also helps in water management by installing grey water & rainwater storage systems. This water management helps in various ways such as –

  1. Recycle water for agricultural purposes and flushing in washrooms
  2. Low flushing washrooms
  3. Water-efficient accessories like low flow shower heads, self-closing taps, etc.
  • Green building – health components

Green building materials are non-toxic, emission-free and non-VOC in nature that helps to improve the quality of air inside the room. It eventually helps in minimizing the rate of various health issues such as asthma, allergies, frequent sickness, etc.

The insulation system also improves with the use of green building material which eventually improves the health of the people living within the building.

Different Eco-friendly Materials list for Construction

The use of concrete in constructions no doubt builds strong huge buildings but if we think from an environmental point of view, its effect is quite hazardous to the environment. The commercial concrete emits a huge amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere during its production which leads to climate change.

We all need to find a way out of this situation. To tackle this situation, you can use green building material in place of concrete. The main purpose to use sustainable building material is to build energy-efficient constructions. Before you choose any of the Eco-friendly building materials, it is very important that you know the properties of these materials. Here is Eco-friendly materials list that will help you to choose the best building material for construction as per your choice –

  • Bamboo

Bamboo is a reasonable green building material. It is a durable material to use for construction which gives the most elegant look to the structure. Bamboo can grow in any climatic conditions which makes it cost-effective as well. Bamboo is a material with a renewable property that can be used as an alternative to concrete.

  • Straw Bales

In the previous era, people used to build their houses with straw bales which are very good renewable material. Straw ales have natural insulation properties to protect from heat or cold climate outside. Straw bales can be used to build the walls of a house replacing concrete.

  • Ashcrete

Ashcrete is used as a green building material in place of concrete. It is made up of fly ash. Fly ash is actually a by-product of coal released when coal gets burnt. By using fly ash, the traditional components available in concrete can be replaced with fly ash.

  • Recycled Plastic

The researchers are creating recycled plastic building material. Recycled plastic is a very good thought to make use of landfill plastic wastes. Recycled plastic is an alternative of concrete which also reduces the emission of greenhouse gases and also reduces the weight.

  • Grasscrete

Grasscrete is a green building material specially used to create a walkway or driveway floors. The grass create is built in such a manner that there are open spaces in between.

These open spaces allow grass to grow and replace the overall usage of concrete to create a floor. These open spaces also help in absorbing the rainwater.

  • Timbercrete

Timbercrete is actually a mixture of sawdust and concrete, hence it is much lighter than traditional concrete. It can be created into different shapes such as bricks, slabs, etc.

It is one of the interesting Eco-friendly building materials which not only reduces transportation emission but also used as an alternative to energy-intensive components of concrete.

  • Sand Bags

Sandbags are mainly used to build the walls of a construction. Usually, the bags used are made up of burlap but since this material can decompose quite easily so people have started using polypropylene bags to make sandbags to be used for construction.

  • Wood

You must have seen a cottage made of wood, it looks so beautiful and stylish. Wood requires very less energy-intensive techniques to transform it into construction products. As we all know that trees are very important for the environment, hence the wood for construction should be used in such a way that it does not affect the biodiversity of the planet.

  • Slate Roofing

Slate is found in the form of rock and is one of the reasonable green building materials. It is a highly durable material. Slate is used to making tiles and these tiles are used for roofing.

  • Steel

Steel is a perfect Eco-friendly material used for roofing. It can be recycled again. It is a durable material to be used in the form of panels for roofing.

  • Thatch

Thatch is actually a dried form of straw or rushes used as a roofing material. It is mostly used in villages for the construction of roofs. Thatch is available quite reasonably and is a good insulator as well.

  • Composites

Composite is a green building material named after its formation. It is made up of composite materials such as cellulose layered in between two metal or plastic sheets. Composite is formed in panels and used for roofing. Composite is much lighter material and acts as an insulator as well which also helps in energy saving.

  • Natural Fiber

Natural fibers such as cotton, wool, etc. are used as an Eco-friendly material for insulation purposes. They are recyclable materials.  It is used to construct the walls of a structure.

  • Non-Voc Paints

You can use Non-VOC paints that are environmentally friendly. VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) paints forms Ozone when comes in contact with direct sunlight which is quite harmful to your health.

  • Cellulose

Cellulose is made up of paper waste and is a recycled product. It is available at a reasonable cost in the market and acts as a good insulator.

  • Hempcrete

Hempcrete is formed with the inner fibers of the hemp plant. It is very similar to traditional concrete. Lime is used to bind the woody fiber of hemp plant together to make it concrete-like solid material. It is a renewable resource and is light in weight as well.

  • Cork

Cork acts as the best insulator that helps to save electrical energy, especially in the winter season. Corks also act as a sound insulator. You can cover the outer wall of your house with cork panels.

  • Ferrock

Ferrock is new research on the Eco-friendly materials list. It is made up of recycled material such as steel dust to make a building material that is much stronger than concrete. Ferrock absorbs carbon dioxide which makes it less CO2 intensive as compared to traditional concrete.

  • Natural Clay

It can be used as an alternate of gypsum-based plasters. Natural clay plasters can give a beautiful look to the interior but it should be done in a proper way by the skilled people.

  • Stone

Stones are a durable and naturally available building material. Stones can be used to construct exterior walls and flooring for long-lasting protection.

We need to save environment by using these materials in our life. If you have used these materials in your life comment and share it with friends. Lets save environment together.
