Those extra chemicals might not be visible to the eye, but they cause more damage than you can imagine. As they don’t break down or disappear when discarded, they travel easily, polluting natural systems and harming every living being.

This usually happens unintentionally due to unawareness and goes unseen until it’s too late to do something about it.

Where These Chemicals Are Used Before They Spread?

Before any damage, these chemicals have to be used every day first. While looking to enhance safety on the one side, as well as hygiene and convenience, those chemicals go under the radar for the majority.

However, they are spreading, like a contagious virus through nature, and long-term aftereffects can’t go unnoticed. It is important to first know where they come from, after which you can more easily pay attention to such things.

What seems like a procedure and necessary equipment is more harmful to us and our environment than we thought.

The main component used is aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF), which creates a protective cover that separates the fuel and oxygen.

What’s more, typical AFFF contains ‘PFAS’ chemicals, which do not decompose. So repeated exposure to AFFF, through training or emergencies, has a direct effect on people around it and the local environment. Consequently, these chemicals get stuck in soil and water systems.

Industrial settings

Looking from the industrial aspect, chemicals used for coatings, heat resistance, and cleaning usually contain PFAS. Many facilities’ wastewater systems don’t fully filter harmful substances, contaminating ecosystems. Besides, working in such a hazardous workplace also affects individuals in the long run, as those chemicals are poisonous to our bodies.

Everyday consumer products

To make it even worse, there doesn’t have to be direct contact with nature, as everyday consumer products also apply PFAS. They are water and stain-resistant, which makes them perfect for clothing, furniture, and food packaging.

Through repeated washing and disposal, traces of PFAS can find their way into drains, while silently influencing you, too.

On top of that, while each household may appear modest, emphasizing this behaviour and not doing anything in prevention contributes to environmental contamination.

How Chemicals Enter Natural Systems?

Here’s the thing: the most problematic part is that chemicals do not have to be dumped to get to nature. Normal weather changes help them move through ecosystems.

As mentioned, waste released in rivers and other bodies of water, the rain also helps them get into drains and soil, spreading them across urban areas.

Consequently, when those hazards flow freely through soil, getting into the groundwater, they pollute the sources of drinking water and further harm nature and animals.

This process is small and hardly detectable, but it continues to grow.

What Happens After Contamination?

Chemicals accumulate over time, not breaking down, but through constant exposure, permanently change the environment and general health.

PFAS, as a component that does not resolve over time, enters every part, from soil, drinking water, to being present in living organisms, affecting food chains.

Every organism is exposed to this, which is called bioaccumulation. This is the reason you can see so many sick animals, dead fish, or some born with defects.

Humans can come into contact with contaminated food and water, food through fish caught in rivers, and polluted water. Usually people aren’t even aware of the negative health issues this brings (e.g., decreased immunity, hormonal imbalance, organ failure, cancer, etc.)

The biggest downside is that it can take years until it is fully detected. So by the time these chemicals accumulate, it can lead to AFFF and PFAS contamination lawsuits. And the lawsuits are the least worrisome of all the possible problems. It’s human lives that could be at stake.

As communities seek accountability for the caused damage, the reality won’t change drastically.

Even if everyone stopped implementing those toxic chemicals, current treatments aren’t capable of removing them completely.

All in all, chemical pollution won’t end up where it began. What once came into contact with nature is extra hard to dig out of the system completely.

But knowing how they flow and where they are mostly contained raises individual awareness. Maybe not right now, however, through time, you will start to look out for ingredients and to double-check every product you opt for.

Prevention is key, but it doesn’t come overnight.

Putting an end to these chemicals might take a while, but it’s certainly better to prevent them than to heal and fight them later on.
