Introduction to Water Pollution Essay

Water is the most essential component for us to survive. Nature has given us a beautiful gift in the form of water. We need water to perform various activities in a day like drinking, bathing, washing, cooking, etc. Without water, we will not be able to survive on Earth.

Unfortunately, the sad fact is that most of the water present on Earth’s surface has been polluted. This is a very serious environmental problem across the world. The pollutants have entered into the water bodies whether it is a lake, a river or a big ocean. We have contributed majorly to cause water pollution through various activities like agricultural activities, dumping industrial wastes, disposal of garbage & sewage, etc.

What Is Water Pollution?

When different contaminants get dissolve in different water bodies like lakes, rivers, oceans, etc. then it causes water pollution. These contaminants lower the quality of water by changing the biological, physical or chemical properties of water. These changes disrupt the aquatic ecosystem and make it an unhealthy place to live for plants and animals underwater.

Causes of Water Pollution

Water pollution has various causes, The major sources of water pollution are caused by humans. We pollute water bodies through various activities like agricultural activities, chemicals from industries, etc. This essay on water pollution will cover major causes that are as-

  • Water pollution through industrial waste

Industrial waste from different factories is one of the main causes of water pollution. When industrial waste like chemicals, metals, toxins, etc. mix with water, it changes the pH level of the water. This industrial waste increases the acidity of the water which is not good for the water ecosystem.

  • Water pollution through the disposal of waste

When we dispose of sewage, garbage, and other waste material into the water bodies, it releases various pollutants in the water. The harmful chemicals, toxins, etc. from these pollutants get dissolve with water. These chemicals turn the water into poisonous which is very toxic for the plants and animals underwater.

  • Water pollution through Agricultural activities

The farmers use different pesticides and fertilizers for agricultural purposes. The pesticides and fertilizers enter into water bodies through rainwater. When chemicals from these pesticides & fertilizers dissolve with water, it destroys the aquatic ecosystem.

  • Water pollution through acid rain

Water pollution is directly affected by air pollution. When the level of sulfur dioxide increases to higher levels then it causes acid rain. When this acid rain precipitates on different water bodies, it turns the water into acidic. The acidic water changes the entire chemistry of the water causing the death of water animals like fishes.

  • Water pollution through Oil spills

The oil spill is one of the big reasons to cause water pollution. When a huge amount of oil spilled in the ocean from the oil tanker, it contaminates a wide area in the ocean. For example – Exxon Valdez is a big incident of oil spill accidents happened on the coast of Alaska. In this accident, almost 11 million gallon oil was spread into the ocean surface.

Major Water Pollutants

Major water pollutants are-

  • Industrial waste
  • VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds)
  • Chemical waste
  • Pollutants from livestock activities
  • Heavy metals
  • Pesticides, fertilizers, herbicides, etc.

Harmful Effects of Water Pollution

Water pollution not only affects humans but it affects the entire ecosystem quite badly. The effects of water pollution are as follows-

  • Effects of water pollution on human

When we drink polluted water, it causes various health problems such as typhoid, hepatitis, cholera, etc. Sometimes these health problems may become disastrous if the level of pollutants is very high in the water.

  • Causes disturbance in the ecosystem

Our ecosystem requires proper balance for a healthy environment to live peacefully. The ecosystem gets affected even if a small change occurs. Water pollution is a very big environmental problem. It affects the entire balance of the ecosystem.
Due to water pollution, the level of pollutants increased a lot in the water bodies. Due to which the aquatic animals like fishes die, unfortunately.

  • Eutrophication is a big problem

There are various chemicals that pollute water bodies like rivers, ponds, lakes, etc. When these chemicals get dissolve with water, it allows a huge amount of algae to grow. This algae growth covers the upper surface of the water bodies. Due to extreme algal bloom, the level of oxygen decreases in the water that affects the ecosystem underwater.

  • Water pollution affects the food chain

The food chain gets highly affected by water pollution. Water animals like fishes, shellfishes, etc. consume the pollutants present in the water. When these animals are eaten by other big water animals then the pollutants get transferred. This process continues and eventually affects humans also when they consume these polluted fishes. In this way, water pollution spoils the entire food chain.

How Can We Control and Prevent Water Pollution?

We can reduce the harmful effects of water pollution by following some preventive measures. These are as follows-

  • Avoid using weed killers

You can suggest your parents avoid weed killers or herbicides. Ask them to pull it off from the yard to treat weeds.

  • Sewage treatment

Improper sewage disposal is one of the major problems that cause water pollution. We should treat waste products properly before we dispose of it into the water body to reduce water pollution effects.

  • Use Eco-friendly products

Using Eco-friendly products is a very good initiative to control water pollution. You can use Eco-friendly households to minimize water pollution.

  • Collect the trash

Do not forget to collect your trash whenever you go to visit any beach. If you leave the trash at the beach, it will ultimately go into the seawater.

  • Minimizes the use of pesticides and fertilizers

We should try to minimize the use of pesticides or fertilizers for agricultural purposes to control water pollution. The chemical from these pesticides and fertilizers ultimately goes into water bodies causing water pollution.

We all are living in an environment like a family where everyone is important to survive and thus water is important. Our life majorly depends on water but we cannot consume polluted water. We can make this situation quite better than present so that water animals and plants live a healthy life.

You can take initiative to take some helpful steps to reduce water pollution, such as minimizing the use of pesticides, using Eco-friendly detergent, etc. You can also work in a group and work together to clean a water body near you.
