Environment

What is the Scope of Environmental Studies?

If we reverse the gear and look into 40 years, back then, environmental sciences (Scope of Environmental Studies) were the study of geophysics, geochemistry, ecology, hydrology, oceanology, meteorology that closely attempted to touch the interrelationships between these disciplines.

Now 40 years later, today’s environmental sciences try to touch the genuine part of the environmental trends that have the potential to associate the interrelationships of the man and the environment along with some of his effects and mitigations.

Disciplines:

Basically, environmental science divided into three major disciplines:

  • Environmental Sciences
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Environmental Management

And today, there is a growing demand in the field of environmental studies majorly because of its application in many disciplines, by seeing the importance of the study of environmental science as a key to spreading awareness among today’s generation.

Multidisciplinary Nature:

Thus, describing briefly, modern environmental studies involve mainly four broad categories of studies that provide solutions for many environmental problems:

  • Basics and applied sciences: The seeking of practical answers which can sustain human civilization on the finite resources of the world (i.e., applied science) has been further classified into two categories of Physical Science and Life Science.
  • Where physical science comes with a package of subjects of physics, chemistry, earth science, and atmospheric science, life science comes with the study package of biology, microbiology, biochemistry, etc.
  • Technology: Here, you study different technologies used in the civil field, chemical field, hydraulics technology, and nanotechnology.
  • Management and Awareness: It is a study of the impact that humans have on the environment and the environmental resources through subjects like Economics, Law, Management, Sociology, Mass communication, etc.
  • Modelling: Environmental modelling is creating and using mathematical models that help in informing both decisions and policies by increasing the understanding of the natural systems and their behavior concerning the changing conditions. We use it for research and involve subjects like Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science.

It is a multidisciplinary academic subject aim to solve different and various environmental problems. So, the solving of distinct problems depends on various disciplines, which is the answer to why environmental studies became a multidisciplinary subject.

Now, the total importance of Environmental Science covered in the following two heads:

Scope of Environmental Studies

Rather than getting a job that most of us describe as the meaning of Scope of Environmental Studies. It is more of being aware of and gaining some knowledge.

By studying, Environmental Studies will come across with some solutions to the problems of how to:

Maintain natural resources:

The natural resources are not unlimited; they are limited, for example, water. With the growth of our population and the growth of some organisms, every natural resource is in high demand, but it can be managed by applying studies carefully.

The exploitation and exploration of environmental resources have caused different environmental damage. That includes pollution of air, water, and land along with ecological disturbances includes damage to the natural flora and fauna.

Controlling Pollution:

With the increasing activities of every organism present, the environment is getting polluted

One way is to emphasize the promotion of clean and low-waste technologies, reuse, and recycle waste along with minimizing waste, human resource development at the institutional level.

A new source of food:

The study of the environment will form and open some alternative ways to discover alternative sources of food for different organisms, or maybe for the human being.

There is a considerable amount of impact on the consumption and production of food on the environment.

It is also a considerable drain of other resources such as energy, water, land, and nutrients.

Human Welfare:

The study of Environmental Science lets you know the composition and relationship of the environment with the human being.

After the study of the environment, we use humans for human welfare.

Evolution:

The development of the complex Organisms from the simple or one.

The study of the environment discloses the process of evolution of how evolution takes place here on earth is the scope of the environment.

Genetics:

Environmental Studies lets you know about the different genes present in the different wild animals, so the wild animals or the organisms are the reservoirs of the different genes.

You can also identify some beneficial genes after the study of environmental science. Then such genes can be isolated and can also be implanted in the human being or another organism for human welfare or the solutions to the environmental problems

Survival of the Human Race:

Environmental Science guides that a human being is not only a single citizen of any country rather a citizen of the earth.

The total earth acts as a unit, and each citizen is the citizen of the total globe. Every activity of the human being has a favorable and unfavorable effect on the environment

So, the human being is an inseparable part of the environment. The survival of humans is directly proportional to the sustainability of the environment

Hence, such a relationship and sustainability concept will develop in the human being with the Scope of Environmental Studies.

Conclusion

Now summing up the importance of studying environmental sciences is that its main serving aim of making the students realize the significance of natural resources. And to learn to develop solutions for the challenges and the problems that the world is facing to pressing environmental problems.

To pressure the environmental problems, In India, UGC (University Grants Commission) has recommended to all the universities to introduce a course based on environmental sciences that can create awareness about the problems concerned with the environment along with teaching the students about the ecosystem.

To raise awareness to spread concern about environmental issues and provide sustainable strategies to solve and handle the present situation and future problems.

The role of media also comes into play for making the people aware of environmental issues. The government alone cannot take the entire responsibilities of protecting our environment.
